Can you believe it has been 14 years since Mean Girls was made!? 14 years, wtf?! What’s more – apart from the fact that Lindsay Lohan is looking a whole lot different these days…
…you can’t even tell the movie is an oldie. There’s a reason Vogue calls it: “One of the most iconic movies of this generation”.
With October 3 upon us (aka “Mean Girls Day” where fans annually get riled up about the movie due to Cady casually dropping the date in a conversation with crush Aaron), we thought we’d use the timing to take a look back at the 14 Mean Girls quotes that still remain totally relevant in 2018…
#1 “Don’t let the haters stop you from doing your thang…” – Kevin G
You do you. And if you ‘doing you’ means Crocs and lederhosen – then go for it.
#2 “I’m sorry that people are so jealous of me. But I can’t help it that I’m popular.” – Gretchen
Damn, I love how much Gretchen loves herself. I really do… but maybe keep the self-love professions to your Instagram posts and your Mum as opposed to telling anyone who’ll listen about it.
#3 “And they have this book, this “Burn Book” where they write mean things about girls in our grade…” – Cady
Remember the Burn Book where all The Plastics wrote down rumours, stories, and gossip about their schoolmates? Didn’t turn out that great for the creators. Everyone loves a good gossip – but try not to get nasty… most times the person gets wind of it and then you have to do that awkward grovelling apology thing.
#4 “So then, for my birthday party, which was an all-girls pool party, I was like, “Janis, I can’t invite you, because I think you’re lesbian.” I mean I couldn’t have a lesbian at my party. There were gonna be girls there in their *bathing suits*.” – Regina
Umm, pretty sure we’ve moved on from this type of thinking… but a reminder to everyone out there (because I do still think there is confusion around this) – just because you have short hair, doesn’t make you a lesbian. Mind blown.
#5 “In the real world, Halloween is when kids dress up and beg for candy. But in girl world, Halloween is the one time of year a girl can dress like a total slut and no other girl can say anything about it.” – Cady
Yep, it was true, is true, and will always be true. And at festivals. Festivals and Halloween.
#6 “One time I saw Cady Heron wearing army pants and flip-flops. So I bought army pants and flip-flops.” – Random School Girl With A Heavy Flow
Replace “Cady Heron” with “Tammy Hembrow” and you just made this 2018.
#7 “Calling somebody else fat won’t make you any skinnier. Calling someone stupid doesn’t make you any smarter. And ruining Regina George’s life definitely didn’t make me any happier. All you can do in life is try to solve the problem in front of you.” – Cady
Don’t put someone else down to make yourself look better – just be better.
#8 “Regardless! Ex-boyfriends are just off limits to friends. I mean, that’s just like, the rules of feminism!” – Gretchen

Off limits in 2004. Off limits in 2018. Don’t go there, sister.
#9 “Don’t have sex because you will get pregnant and die! Don’t have sex in the missionary position, don’t have sex standing up, just don’t do it, OK, promise? OK, now everybody take some rubbers.” – Coach Carr
Rubbers are always a good idea…
#10 “You got your freshmen, ROTC guys, preps, J.V. jocks, Asian nerds, cool Asians, Varsity jocks, unfriendly black hotties, girls who eat their feelings, girls who don’t eat anything, desperate wannabes, burnouts, sexually active band geeks, the greatest people you will ever meet and the worst: Beware of plastics…” – Janis
Pretty much anywhere you go you will find these people, even the Plastics (although they won’t be called ‘The Plastics’, but you’ll be able to tell…😉).
#11 “I used to think there was just fat and skinny. But apparently, there are lots of things that can be wrong on your body.” – Cady
Unfortunately, this sentiment is still very much felt by the majority of women out there – even the Gretchen’s of this world.
#12 “Oh, I love seeing teachers outside of school. It’s like seeing a dog walk on its hind legs.”- Janis
Yep, and it’s even weirder seeing them at the same pub as you… What do you mean they have a life outside of the classroom?!
#13 “I know having a boyfriend might seem like the only thing important to you right now, but you don’t have to dumb yourself down in order for a guy to like you.” – Ms Norbury
It’s true, you don’t… just wear tight clothing… #jks
#14 “The weird thing about hanging out with Regina was that I could hate her, and at the same time, I still wanted her to like me… Same with Gretchen: the meaner Regina was to her, the more Gretchen tried to win Regina back. She knew it was better to be in The Plastics, hating life, than to not be in at all. Because being with The Plastics was like being famous… people looked at you all the time and everybody just knew stuff about you.” – Cady
Everyone likes being popular – just don’t let it get to your head or people will give you protein bars that make you fat… and nobody wants that.
